Chapter 23: Consolidated Account Statement (CAS)

As an investor's financial journey evolves, they often accumulate multiple investments across diverse asset categories: equity shares held in a demat account with NSDL, corporate bonds in a CDSL demat account, and mutual fund units held in physical folios across various Asset Management Companies (AMCs) and RTAs.

Tracking investments across scattered statements was historically cumbersome and created the risk of forgetting folios or losing track of family investments.

To address this fragmentation, SEBI introduced the Consolidated Account Statement (CAS). The CAS is a single, unified monthly financial document that aggregates an investor's entire portfolio of securities and mutual fund holdings across all depositories and mutual fund houses under a single, unified view, linked by the investor's Permanent Account Number (PAN).

The Consolidated Account Statement offers a comprehensive overview of an investor's financial wealth:

What CAS Encompasses

  1. Demat Holdings: All equity shares, preference shares, debentures, corporate bonds, government securities, Treasury Bills, REITs, and InvITs held across all demat accounts with both NSDL and CDSL.
  2. Mutual Fund Folios: All mutual fund investments, whether held in demat mode or in statement-of-account (physical folio) mode across all AMCs.
  3. Transaction Details: Comprehensive records of all purchases, sales, redemptions, switches, Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs), Systematic Transfer Plans (STPs), and Systematic Withdrawal Plans (SWPs) executed during the reporting month.
  4. Corporate Benefits: Details of dividends received, bonus shares credited, stock splits, and rights entitlements.
  5. Portfolio Valuation: Closing market prices for listed securities and latest available Net Asset Values (NAVs) for mutual fund units, along with total portfolio net worth.

CAS operations are managed through close collaboration between central depositories and mutual fund RTAs:

Generation Rules

  • Monthly CAS: Dispatched on or before the 15th of each month for any PAN that had transaction activity during the preceding month.
  • Half-Yearly CAS (Dormant Folios): For accounts with no transactions during a six-month period, a half-yearly CAS is generated in April and October, detailing holding balances and portfolio valuations.

Delivery Modes

  • e-CAS (Electronic CAS): Delivered directly to the investor's registered email address as a secure, password-protected PDF (typically encrypted using the investor's PAN and date of birth).
  • Online CAS Download: Investors can generate and download their updated CAS on demand from the web portals of NSDL, CDSL, CAMS, or KFintech using their PAN and OTP verification.

Key Investor Benefits

  • Complete Visibility: Eliminates hidden or forgotten investments, ensuring heirs and family members have a unified record of assets.
  • Independent Audit: Because CAS is compiled by neutral central depositories and RTAs, it provides an independent check against broker records.
  • Tax and Wealth Planning: Simplifies tax computation, capital gains calculations, and annual estate reviews.
