Chapter 15: Non-Financial Transactions

Chapter 15: Non-Financial Transactions

Learning Objectives

After studying this chapter, you should understand:

  • Standard Operating Procedures for updating non-financial investor details: Name, Address, Bank Mandates, and Status.
  • The mandatory 10-day cooling-off period for bank account changes.
  • Procedure when a Minor Attains Majority.
  • The mechanics of Pledge and Lien Marking on mutual fund units.
  • Legal documentation and procedural hierarchies for the Transmission of Units.
  • RTA value-added portals (MF Central, Camsonline, KFintech) and the MITRA initiative.

15.1 Change of Bank Details & The 10-Day Cooling-Off Period

To protect investors against unauthorized account takeovers and cyber fraud, RTAs enforce strict verification protocols for changing registered bank accounts:

[Step 1] Investor submits Change of Bank Request Form to RTA.
   │
   ▼
[Step 2] Mandatory Proofs:
         1. Proof of Existing (Old) Bank Account (Cancelled cheque, passbook, or bank letter).
         2. Proof of New Bank Account (Original cancelled cheque with pre-printed name & IFSC).
   │
   ▼
[Step 3] RTA validates signatures and verifies bank details against penny-drop verification.
   │
   ▼
[Step 4] **THE 10-CALENDAR-DAY COOLING-OFF PERIOD ENFORCED!**
         If a redemption request is submitted within 10 days of a bank change request,
         the redemption payout to the new bank account is held in abeyance until the
         cooling-off period lapses, and confirmation alerts are dispatched to the investor.

15.2 Minor Becoming Major

When a minor unit holder turns 18 years of age:

  • The authority of the natural/legal guardian to operate the folio terminates automatically. All SIPs and standing instructions in the folio are suspended until major status is verified.
  • Documents Required:
    1. Form for Minor Attaining Majority (MAM);
    2. Proof of age (Birth certificate, Passport, PAN);
    3. Fresh KYC of the major;
    4. New bank account opened exclusively in the name of the major;
    5. Signature attestation by the bank manager where the major maintains the account.

15.3 Pledge and Lien Marking on Mutual Fund Units

Mutual fund units can be pledged as collateral to banks, NBFCs, or financial institutions for obtaining loans:

  1. Lien Invocation: Investor and lender submit a joint Lien Request Form. The RTA marks a "Lien" on the specified units in the folio.
  2. Operational Effect: The unit balance is blocked; the investor cannot redeem, switch, or transfer pledged units. Dividends (IDCW) can be paid to the investor or lender as agreed.
  3. Lien Removal / Invocation:
    • If loan is repaid, lender sends a formal Lien Removal Letter, and RTA frees the units.
    • If borrower defaults, lender invokes the lien, and RTA redeems the units, transferring the proceeds directly to the lender's bank account.

15.4 Transmission of Mutual Fund Units

Transmission is the legal process of transferring units to the lawful successor upon the demise of the sole holder or all joint holders:

15.5 MITRA: Mutual Fund Investment Tracing and Retrieval Assistant

MITRA is a nationwide industry platform launched under the auspices of AMFI and RTAs:

  • Serves as a dedicated tracing portal enabling citizens and legal heirs to locate forgotten, unclaimed, or inactive mutual fund folios across all AMCs in India using basic PAN and demographic searches.
  • Assists legal heirs in initiating time-bound transmission and redemption claims.

Chapter Summary & Exam Cheat Sheet

  • Bank Change Verification: Requires proof of BOTH old bank account and new bank account.
