Chapter 14: Financial Transactions

Learning Objectives

After studying this chapter, you should understand:

  • Distinction between Common Application Forms and Transaction Slips.
  • Processing workflows for Purchase, Additional Purchase, and Redemption transactions.
  • Regulatory mechanics of Consolidated Account Statements (CAS).
  • Structure and tax consequences of Switch Transactions (Inter-scheme vs. Intra-scheme).
  • Systematic execution workflows: SIPs, SWPs, and STPs.
  • Mandatory statutory Turnaround Times (TATs) for redemption and dividend payouts.
  • Role of the RTA in computing distributor commissions and processing statutory deductions.

14.2 Systematic Transaction Plans

  1. Systematic Investment Plan (SIP): Allows an investor to invest a fixed sum at regular periodic intervals (monthly, quarterly) in a mutual fund scheme, harnessing rupee cost averaging and compounding.
  2. Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP): Allows an investor to withdraw a fixed sum or capital appreciation from their investment balance at regular periodic intervals, providing regular cash flow.
  3. Systematic Transfer Plan (STP): Automatically transfers a fixed sum from one scheme (typically a liquid or debt scheme) to another scheme (typically an equity scheme) within the same mutual fund house.

14.3 Switch Transactions & Tax Implications

A Switch is an order to transfer capital from one scheme or plan to another within the same mutual fund family:

  • Inter-Scheme Switch: Transferring from Scheme A (e.g., Liquid Fund) to Scheme B (e.g., Flexi Cap Fund).
    • Tax Event: In the eyes of the Income Tax Act, an inter-scheme switch is treated as a Redemption from Scheme A followed by a Fresh Purchase in Scheme B. Capital gains tax is triggered on the switch date!
  • Intra-Scheme Switch: Transferring between options within the same scheme (e.g., Regular Plan to Direct Plan, or Growth Option to IDCW Option).

14.4 Consolidated Account Statement (CAS)

Under SEBI regulations, depositories and RTAs generate a single, unified Consolidated Account Statement (CAS):

  • Scope: Consolidates all mutual fund folios across all AMCs along with all demat equity, bond, and ETF holdings held under the same Permanent Account Number (PAN).
  • Dispatch Timeline: Sent by email/post by the 15th calendar day of the following month for every month in which a transaction occurs. If no transactions occur in a half-year, a half-yearly CAS is dispatched in April and October.

14.5 Statutory Turnaround Times (TATs)

SEBI mandates strict turnaround standards for financial disbursements:

Financial ActivityStatutory Turnaround Standard
Dispatch / Credit of Redemption ProceedsWithin 3 working days from date of redemption (within 1 working day for Liquid and Overnight schemes).
Payment of IDCW (Dividend) ProceedsWithin 7 working days from the record date.
Allotment of Units in Ongoing OfferWithin 5 working days of transaction acceptance.
Dispatch of Individual Account StatementWithin 5 working days of transaction execution.

[!NOTE] If an AMC fails to transfer redemption proceeds within the stipulated 3 working days, it is legally bound to pay penal interest at the rate of 15% per annum to the investor for the period of delay!
