Nifty 50 Outlook: Index Closes at 23,146 After 2.8% Weekly Gain as IT Stocks Surge

The Nifty 50 outlook improved after the index closed at 23,146.15 on October 16, up 148.80 points or 0.65%, to finish the week 2.8% higher. The Sensex gained 2,250 points over the same week, and IT stocks led the recovery.

Nifty 50 Outlook: Levels and Indicators

The Nifty recovered from an early decline to 22,913.80 and finished near the day's high, leaving a long lower wick on the daily candle. Sumeet Bagadia, Executive Director at Choice Broking, said this shows buying interest at lower levels. The levels below are his view and not a TradeKaizen forecast.

Bagadia said the put-call ratio at 1.08 reflects a mildly positive derivatives setup, while India VIX was steady at 14.0250. He said a sustained move above resistance could extend the recovery, and holding the support zone matters for keeping momentum positive. For Bank Nifty, which was range-bound after an initial gap-up failed to produce a strong directional move, he said a decisive breakout above resistance is needed to strengthen the bullish outlook.

Sectors and Stocks: IT Leads

IT was the top sectoral performer, rallying over 10% for the week. Media, cement, auto, metal and PSU bank indices also advanced, while financial services in the mid and small-cap space, consumer durables and healthcare faced selling pressure. The Healthcare and FMCG indices fell more than 1% for the week.

What Drove the Market This Week

The week began with pressure on the bond market. Consumer inflation hovering near the upper end of the RBI's tolerance band and a hotter-than-expected wholesale price index (WPI) reading pushed the benchmark bond yield to a multi-year high, reviving fears of further monetary tightening. The RBI's decision to raise the daily CRR maintenance requirement to absorb surplus liquidity added to the caution.

Sentiment improved as the RBI opened a special dollar window for oil marketing companies and tightened hedging norms, which helped the rupee rebound. Softer crude prices and easing bond yields further revived risk appetite, and investors turned to companies with strong Q2FY27 business updates.

Market expectations of a review of the long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax and securities transaction tax (STT) also supported sentiment. These are expectations only, and no change has been confirmed in the source material.

What to Watch

The technical zones identified by Choice Broking are the immediate markers: 22,900-22,980 support and 23,250-23,300 resistance on the Nifty 50, and 55,400-55,500 support and 56,000-56,100 resistance on the Bank Nifty. Inflation prints, bond yields and further RBI liquidity and rupee measures were the main macro triggers during the week.

FSSAI Issues Show-Cause Notices to Nestlé India and HUL Over Misleading Label Claims

FSSAI has issued show-cause notices to Nestlé India and Hindustan Unilever over misleading product claims and labelling issues, and suspended the licences of two regional food manufacturers after safety violations. The notices cover Horlicks Mother's Plus Kesar, Nescafé ready-to-drink drinks and Nestlé Resource Renal. A show-cause notice asks a company to explain; it is not a finding of violation.

FSSAI issued a show-cause notice to HUL over "Healthy Birth Weight" claims on Horlicks Mother's Plus Kesar 400 g BIB, which it says violate the FSS (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018.
