King River Resources Wakes Sleeping WA Goldfield: RC Drilling Targets Stockpile Mystery and High-Grade Lodes at Mindoolah

There is an old adage in gold exploration that some of the best real estate for finding the precious metal lies immediately adjacent to where it has already been discovered. Better still, the saying goes, is to look beneath an old mine or sift through the waste piles left behind by generations of earlier miners who chased only the richest ore in a far lower gold price environment. King River Resources (ASX: KRR) is now putting that philosophy to the test at the historic Mindoolah goldfield in Western Australia's Murchison region, where old mine dumps, a puzzling production mismatch, and untested lode positions are being revisited with modern methods and contemporary exploration tools.

The company has mobilised a reverse circulation (RC) drill rig to the project, located 70 kilometres north-west of the historic town of Cue, to answer two fundamental questions. First, how much gold remains in the old stockpiles and waste dumps that were discarded because the cut-off grades of the 1980s rendered them uneconomic at the time? Second, did previous miners and drillers miss the true shape of the gold lodes by chasing what they could see at surface rather than the deeper structures that fed and hosted them? The answers, expected within six to eight weeks when initial assay results arrive, could transform Mindoolah from a historical curiosity into King River's defining exploration story.

The Stockpile Puzzle: Where Did All the Rock Go?

The stockpile question moved to centre stage after King River completed a LiDAR survey of the various dumps in May, coupled with detailed volumetric calculations. The assessment revealed a glaring mismatch between the 38,589 tonnes of officially reported production from the 1980s and the more than 1.08 million tonnes of material that the volume estimates indicate was excavated from the old pits across the Mindoolah complex. The numbers simply do not add up, and the discrepancy demands explanation.

Detailed surveys also quantified the remaining surface inventory at approximately 746,000 tonnes of excavated material spread across historic waste dumps and stockpiles. After accounting for this surface material, King River has identified a 339,000-tonne reconciliation gap—rock that was excavated but neither reported as processed production nor accounted for in the current surface inventory. The company believes this missing tonnage may include gold-mineralised material that was discarded or stockpiled separately because the higher cut-off grades of the 1980s—when the gold price was a fraction of today's levels—rendered it sub-economic at the time.

This is the central thesis of the stockpile drilling component of the current program. The company is deploying 167 RC holes for 1,690 metres across three main dumps, with the Excelsior dump receiving the most intensive coverage at 83 holes for 1,017 metres. The Cundy dump will be tested with 38 holes for 380 metres, while the Mindoolah Main Reef area will see 46 holes for 293 metres. Bulk sampling and density characterisation are also underway to help firm up tonnage estimates and reconcile the historic volumes with greater precision.

The economics of stockpile reprocessing have been transformed in the decades since these dumps were created. Material that was considered waste when gold traded at a few hundred dollars per ounce could represent highly profitable mill feed at today's prices, requiring no mining cost—only the expense of loading, hauling, and processing rock that has already been excavated and sits at surface.

Hard-Rock Targets: Testing the Deeper Potential

King River's second objective addresses the potential for mineralised quartz vein systems beneath and around the old open pits. The company is planning approximately 1,000 metres of RC drilling below the open pits and underground prospects, with holes generally extending to less than 120 metres depth. Critically, these holes will be drilled from revised orientations to test whether earlier drilling campaigns were poorly aligned against the true geometry of the gold-bearing lodes.

Managing Director Graham Gadsby explained the rationale: "Testing these deeper hard-rock targets from alternative, multi-oriented angles will allow us to validate historical logging." The approach reflects a common pitfall in historical exploration, where drill programs designed to test mineralisation visible at surface sometimes miss the structural orientation of the broader mineralised system. By approaching the targets from different angles, King River aims to determine whether the old miners were chasing the edges of something much larger.

At Cundy, the company is testing the theory that the original east-west oriented pit may have cut across multiple north-south-trending lodes, potentially leaving parallel mineralised structures only partially tested or completely untouched. At Excelsior, drilling will test mineralisation 30 metres below the pit floor, using a northeast-southwest-oriented "scissor" layout of opposing holes to assess lode geometry from angles that earlier vertical or near-vertical drilling may have missed entirely.

The Mindoolah Main Reef will see one initial RC hole beneath a cluster of historic underground shafts, with broader drilling expected to await the results of a drone-based magnetic survey before finalising the next phase of program design.

The Intrusive Body: A Potential Mineralising Engine

Adding a larger-scale dimension to the exploration thesis, King River has identified a 1.8-kilometre-long monzonitic intrusive body in the core of a granitoid located just north of the Mindoolah mining centre. The company suggests this structure could represent the heat source and mineralising engine that drove the emplacement of gold into the various Mindoolah structures—and may itself carry economic gold mineralisation.

The evidence, while preliminary, is tantalising. A single historical diamond hole drilled into the intrusive body returned a solid 34 metres grading 0.64 grams per tonne gold. While modest in grade, the intercept demonstrates that the intrusive system is gold-bearing over significant widths, and such broad zones of low-grade mineralisation associated with large intrusive bodies can, under the right circumstances, represent bulk-tonnage targets of considerable scale.

The Bertram's prospect is also being followed up for high-grade structural targets, supported by previous grab samples that returned impressive grades including 31.70 g/t gold, 20.73 g/t gold, and 12.50 g/t gold—results that confirm the presence of high-grade gold in the system and justify systematic exploration to determine their structural context and continuity.

Modern Tools for an Old Goldfield

The current work program is being supported by a high-resolution drone-borne aeromagnetic survey across approximately 9.5 square kilometres of the Mindoolah Mining Centre. The survey is being flown on tight, 25-metre-spaced north-south lines and is designed to detect subtle magnetic breaks, structural offsets, lithological contacts, and cross-cutting structures that may control the emplacement of gold-bearing quartz reefs. This type of detailed geophysical data simply did not exist when the previous generation of miners and explorers worked the field, and it represents a genuine exploration advantage.

King River has characterised its approach as one that is not merely looking to replicate historical results, but to determine whether the source of the rich historic gold reefs can be defined through systematic drilling and modern geophysics. The distinction matters: confirming that high-grade gold exists at Mindoolah is already established by a century of production history. The value that King River seeks to add is understanding the structural and geological controls on that mineralisation with sufficient precision to define resources that the old-timers never had the tools to recognise.

King River also brings a useful financial tailwind to its Mindoolah campaign. The company holds approximately 90 million shares in ASX-listed Tivan, received as consideration for the sale of its Speewah Dome vanadium project. With Tivan shares trading at 27.7 cents, the stake carries a market value approaching $25 million—a significant buffer that funds the current exploration program while insulating shareholders from immediate dilution risk. For a junior explorer embarking on a systematic drilling campaign, the financial flexibility this stake provides represents a meaningful competitive advantage in a sector where capital raising often competes with operational progress for management attention.

Initial assay results from the new drilling are expected within six to eight weeks. If the program can attach firmer gold grades and tonnage estimates to the old stockpiles while simultaneously improving the hard-rock geological model beneath the adjacent workings, Mindoolah could transition rapidly from a footnote in Murchison mining history to the centrepiece of King River's exploration portfolio.
