Netflix Layoffs: Company Cuts About 1,000 Jobs, Its Largest Round Since 2022
Netflix layoffs will affect about 6% of the company's workforce, or roughly 1,000 employees globally, in its largest round of job cuts since 2022. Co-chief executives Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos told staff in a company-wide email on Wednesday, according to reports. Most of the reductions fall in product, technology, legal and human resources.
Netflix layoffs: scale and affected teams
| Reading | Detail | Signal |
|---|---|---|
| Planned cuts | About 1,000 jobs, roughly 6% of staff | Largest since 2022 |
| Headcount base | About 16,000 full-time employees at end of 2025 | 6% equals about 960 roles |
| 2022 comparison | About 450 employees across two rounds | New round is more than double |
| Latest quarterly revenue | $12.6 billion, up 13% year on year | Business still growing |
The numbers are broadly consistent. Six per cent of about 16,000 employees is 960, which rounds to the reported 1,000. Earlier reports before the announcement had pointed to about 5%, or roughly 800 to 850 jobs, so the confirmed figure is somewhat higher.
The co-CEOs said in the memo that Netflix needs to be disciplined about where it puts its people and resources. They said the business is strong and growing and remains on track to deliver its full-year forecast. They also said the company will keep investing heavily in high-impact areas and that its priority now is supporting the employees who are leaving.
Context: growth pace and competition
The cuts come as Netflix faces pressure from free platforms such as YouTube and from a consolidating entertainment industry. Earlier this year Netflix lost a bidding contest for Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming and studio assets to Paramount Skydance, according to the report.
Nielsen data cited in the report show Netflix's share of US television viewing time declining as YouTube's rises. At the Bloomberg Screentime conference, a Netflix co-CEO said the company was not growing as fast as management wanted. Netflix has also been expanding beyond subscriptions through an advertising tier, live programming and gaming.
Market reaction
Netflix shares rose about 0.7% on the day of the announcement, according to the report. This is a single-day move and does not by itself indicate a trend.
