Why Retailers Are Raising Prices
Ongoing conflict in West Asia and disruptions to oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz have put upward pressure on crude oil and petroleum product prices in the international market. This is weighing on the profit margins of fuel retailers. Brent crude traded about 1.08% lower at USD 105.5 per barrel in morning trade on Tuesday, October 13. Mirae Asset said Brent could rise to USD 120 per barrel in the near term if geopolitical tension persists and volatility around the US midterm elections adds to price pressure.
State-Owned Retailers Hold Prices
Prices of regular petrol and diesel at pumps run by state-owned oil companies, including Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL), have not changed anywhere in the country. As a result, the price gap between private-sector and state-run pumps may widen. Customers are advised to check the applicable rates at their nearest pump before refuelling.
Market and Sector Impact
The report does not mention any share price reaction among listed oil marketing companies. Fuel costs are a watched input for inflation, which rose to 5.54% in September on costlier food items. The two private retailers that have raised prices, Jio-bp and Nayara Energy, now charge more for both fuels than before, while state-owned pumps continue at earlier rates.
What to Watch
Track whether Indian Oil, BPCL or HPCL adjust regular petrol and diesel prices, whether other private retailers follow Jio-bp and Nayara Energy, and how Brent crude responds to developments in West Asia and the Strait of Hormuz.
