For the first time in five years, the gap between India’s two biggest retail brokers, Zerodha and Angel One, has shrunk to its narrowest point.
Broker Competition Tightens
Zerodha reported 6.85 million active clients for the nine months ended December, just ahead of Angel One’s 6.76 million. An “active client” is anyone who trades at least once a year.
- Last fiscal year the difference was about 311,000 clients.
- In FY24 the gap widened to 1.17 million, but it has now collapsed back to under 100,000.
Angel One’s Market Share
Angel One’s latest filing shows its retail turnover market share in equity rose 34 basis points year‑on‑year to 20.4 % in Q3 FY26, though it slipped 4 basis points from the previous quarter.
Industry‑Wide Slowdown
The overall number of active traders in India fell by 4.63 million to 44 million by the end of December 2025. The decline is linked to stricter SEBI rules on weekly options, which raised the minimum contract size and tightened margin requirements.
- Contract sizes for Nifty and Sensex weekly options increased to ₹15–20 lakh from ₹5–10 lakh.
- Extreme‑loss margins were raised on expiry days.
- The number of weekly expiry contracts each exchange can launch was limited to one.
These changes hit newer digital brokers hard. Groww, the market leader, saw its active client base drop by 790,000 to 12.1 million.
What This Means for Retail Traders
Zerodha’s co‑founder Nithin Kamath says the firm deliberately avoids push‑notifications, trending‑stock alerts, and other “dark‑pattern” tactics that spur impulsive trading. The goal is to keep thoughtful traders on the platform longer, which benefits both the customers and the broker.
With the client gap narrowing, retail traders can expect more competitive pricing, better platform features, and possibly tighter spreads as the two firms vie for market share.
Market Reaction
Despite the narrowing gap, Angel One’s shares closed about 3 % higher at ₹2,439.3, while the Nifty index slipped 0.22 % to 25,732.3.
