Vodafone Idea’s stock jumped about 9% after the government announced a six‑year freeze on its massive telecom dues.
What the government announced
The Department of Telecommunications told Vodafone Idea that its adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues will be frozen at the December‑end amount of roughly ₹87,700 crore for the next six years. The freeze covers the principal, interest and penalties.
How the repayment plan works
- From March 2026 to March 2031, the company will pay a total of ₹744 crore, about ₹124 crore each year.
- From March 2032 to March 2035, it will add ₹100 crore per year.
- The remaining amount will be split into equal yearly payments from March 2036 to March 2041.
- A new committee will review the dues and its decision will be final.
Share price reaction
The news sent the stock up to ₹12.51, close to a 9% rise from the previous close of ₹11.50. Over the past six months the share has risen about 64%, and it is up roughly 50% over the last year.
Company’s recent performance
Vodafone Idea’s losses have started to narrow and its average revenue per user (ARPU) grew to about ₹180 from ₹166 in the latest quarter, indicating better monetisation.
Why this matters to investors
The freeze lowers the immediate cash burden on the telecom operator and spreads the huge debt over many years. That makes the company’s future cash flow look a bit more stable, which is why investors reacted positively.
