IndiGo, India's largest airline, has seen its shares jump around 3% after CEO Pieter Elbers told employees that the worst of the crisis is behind them. This comes after a tumultuous month that saw mass cancellations and chaos at major airports due to a shortage of crew, particularly pilots.
The crisis was triggered by the introduction of revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms, which mandate more rest hours and humane rosters for pilots. However, IndiGo struggled to realign its network, leading to widespread disruptions. In a video message to employees, CEO Pieter Elbers acknowledged the challenges, saying 'the worst is behind us' and praising the collective dedication of staff.
Elbers announced that IndiGo has now restored its network to 2,200 flights, a testament to the company's teamwork and operating principles. The CEO outlined a three-pronged approach to move forward: resilience, root cause analysis, and rebuilding. An external aviation expert has been appointed to conduct a comprehensive review of the crisis.
IndiGo shares fell over 21% since the beginning of the month, hitting a low of Rs 4,645 per share on December 11. However, the stock has regained more than 7% since then, closing at Rs 5,125 per share. While the shares are still lower than their pre-crisis levels, the recent uptick suggests that investors are cautiously optimistic about the company's prospects.
Remember, this is perspective, not prediction. Do your own research and consider multiple factors before making investment decisions. As the aviation industry continues to evolve, airline stocks like IndiGo will likely remain volatile. Key areas to watch include flight demand, crew management, and regulatory developments. By staying informed and up-to-date, investors can make more informed decisions about their portfolios.
